Senior Advisor to the Council, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Dr. Edgar W. K. Cheng is chairman and managing director of the World-Wide Investment Co. Ltd., and a board member of the Hastings Center. He has held a number of senior positions in finance and public service. In finance, he is a past chairman of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong; vice-chairman and non-executive director of the Hang Seng Bank Ltd.; a vice president of the International Federation of Stock Exchange and founding chairman of the Hong Kong Securities Institute, in addition to many other roles and positions.
Dr. Cheng’s positions with the Hong Kong Government include head of the Central Policy Unit from 1999 to 2001, and vice-chairman, then chairman of the Council for Sustainable Development from 2003 to 2009. He has been dedicated to higher education in Hong Kong throughout his career, and has served as chairman of the University Grants Committee, a member of the Education Commission, and chairman of the Council of The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2003-2009. He continues as senior advisor to the University Council.
Dr. Cheng also plays an active role in Hong Kong-China affairs. He is a member of the 11th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee, and was appointed by the Chinese Government to serve as a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor (1991–1997). He became a Member of the Preparatory Committee and also the Selection Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the National People’s Congress (1996-1997).
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Cheng was a clinical associate professor of medicine at Cornell University Medical College and practiced medicine and conducted clinical research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
