2026 Asian Children’s Palliative Care Hybrid Symposium

We were delighted to be part of this important gathering on 5 September, where our Centre Co‑Director, Prof. Roger CHUNG, and Research Fellow (by courtesy) Prof. Dong DONG contributed to the 2026 Asian Children’s Palliative Care Hybrid Symposium with talks that bridged research, policy, and practice.

Our Centre members unfolded the discussions across two key dimensions, one focused on the systems that shape care, the other on the ethical choices at the bedside:
• Prof. Dong presented on "Shaping the Future of Paediatric Palliative Care in Hong Kong: Evidence, Policy, and Consensus." Her talk examined how research evidence can inform policy development, and how building consensus across sectors is essential to translating that evidence into sustainable care systems for children with life-limiting conditions.

• Prof. Chung closed the Day 1 of the conference, addressing the ethical complexities in end‑of‑life care for critically ill children. Through case analysis, he examined a minor’s capacity to make autonomous decisions and the role of parents as surrogate decision‑makers. He explored how a patient’s medical care preferences should be weighed against parental authority, and how concepts such as Gillick competence and assent apply within Hong Kong’s legal and clinical context when parents and children disagree.

Thank you to Children's Cancer Foundation Hong Kong for hosting this important gathering. We look forward to continuing these conversations with our fellow speakers and participants, together advancing this interdisciplinary dialogue. The CUHK Centre for Bioethics remains committed to bridging research, ethics, and practice.
