AI ‘as’ and ‘for’ Education: Integrating AI Ethics in Curriculum Design and AI Tool Demonstration

What a thought-provoking session it was! On August 21, the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, in collaboration with the Centre for Learning Enhancement and Research (CLEAR), CUHK, hosted an engaging discussion around a question that is rapidly reshaping education: How should we teach AI ethics, and how can we use AI responsibly in teaching and learning? As one participant remarked, the conversation could not have been more timely.

The event was opened by our Centre Co-Director, Dr. Ann Lau, alongside Prof. Paul Lam from CLEAR, setting the stage for a rich and dynamic exchange of ideas. Bringing together educators, clinicians, and technologists, the session explored both the content and practice of AI ethics education, from curriculum design and pedagogical approaches to hands-on demonstrations of AI tools. The discussion was marked by lively participation and thoughtful engagement throughout, underscoring both the opportunities and responsibilities that AI presents for higher education.

What we took away:
▸Embedding AI ethics across the curriculum by Prof. Eunice Chan (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen) with a clear principle: “Integrate, don’t add.”

▸Development and adoption of AI tools by Prof. Qi Dou (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CUHK) with Mr. Qian Wu delivering a live demonstration. Participants were invited to try the tool themselves — and some did so with impressive results. Mr. Marc L., for example, turned a text slide into a Studio Ghibli‑style animation on the spot.

▸Navigating the ethics of AI design moderated by Dr. Ann Lau and Prof. Paul Lam. Dr. Lau also broadened the conversation to include the designer’s perspective — not just how AI is used in teaching, but how it is built, and the ethical responsibilities that come with that process.

▸ Human agency in an AI age by Prof. Paul Lam, who emphasized that only people can own the relationship.

This event stood out not only for the quality of the presentations, but also for the energy and enthusiasm in the room. Colleagues exchanged ideas, experimented with AI tools in real time, and demonstrated a shared commitment to advancing ethics-grounded education. For CUHK Centre for Bioethics, the event reaffirmed our commitment to fostering AI ethics and education through meaningful dialogue, interdisciplinary collaboration, and hands-on learning.
