The 20th Symposium on Building Chinese Bioethics “Ethical Reflections on Human-Machine Relations”
The 20th Symposium on Building Chinese Bioethics was successfully held on 9-10 July 2026. Under the theme “Ethical Reflections on Human-Machine Relations”, the symposium brought together scholars from various disciplines for interdisciplinary dialogue on AI's challenges to humanity, relationships, and social ethics.
Our Centre Advisor, Dr. Derrick Au, was invited to speak at Session 5 – “Intelligent Technologies and Humanistic Ethics II” on 9 July, presenting on: "Ideal and Non-ideal AI Ethics and Governance of Health Use of Large Multi-Modal Models (LMMs): A Critical Reading of the WHO 2024 Guidance and Implications for Hong Kong." Drawing on the WHO 2024 guidance, Dr. Au examined the opportunities and governance challenges of LMMs in healthcare, offering reflections grounded in Hong Kong’s context.

The session was moderated by Prof. Levi Checketts, with Prof. Pak-Hang Wong, PhD and Prof. Baldwin Wong also presenting. The Q&A session fostered lively exchanges. The CUHK Centre for Bioethics extends its gratitude to the Centre for Applied Ethics at Hong Kong Baptist University for the invitation, and remains committed to advancing public discourse on bioethics in step with technological developments.
