Reimagining Bioethics for Tomorrow’s Healthcare: Reflecting on a Landmark APBEN 6th Conference

We are pleased to reflect on the successful Asia Pacific Bioethics Education Network (APBEN) 6th Conference. Held on 31 October and 1 November, this lively gathering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong brought together our community, uniting educators, researchers, and healthcare professionals from across the region to promote dialogue under the theme “Reimagining Bioethics for Tomorrow’s Healthcare”. We also proudly celebrated a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics!

The conference started on 31 October with in-depth Pre-Conference Workshops, covering key topics from Teaching Clinical Ethics and AI in Education to effective evaluation methods in medical education research.

Following its inauguration by distinguished leaders, including Dr. Ann LauProf. Ho Keung NgDr. Wai-Tat Wong, and Dr. Pacifico Eric Eusebio Calderon, the main conference on 1 November unfolded through inspiring Plenary Sessions discussing new advances in undergraduate bioethics teaching, the effect of local cultural context on bioethics education, and the possibility of pre-university ethics teaching, along with dynamic Parallel Sessions showcasing diverse perspectives in bioethics education across the Asia-Pacific region in the morning.

In the afternoon, the focus shifted to the practice of end-of-life care, which in turn required careful consideration of education strategies to facilitate progress. The conference concluded with another round of engaging parallel sessions, culminating in a plenary discussion on adopting student-co-designed interprofessional education (IPE) to ensure the sustainability of bioethics education.

This conference strengthened our shared commitment to advancing bioethics education and practice. A heartfelt thank you to all speakers, partners, and participants for making this exchange of ideas so meaningful. The discussions begun here will undoubtedly shape the future of bioethics education across the Asia Pacific and beyond!
