Roger Yat-Nork Chung, PhD, MBE, MHS, is a social epidemiologist and bioethicist who uses the lens of biomedical ethics and justice to examine the social determinants of health and health inequalities. He is currently examining social determinants such as poverty, deprivation, socioeconomic disadvantage, environmental and housing factors, and migrant status. He is also particularly interested in the health of migrant workers and rare disease patients. Additionally, he is conducting research on aging‐related issues, such as multimorbidity and long‐term/end‐of‐life care. Collectively, the purpose of his research is to inform health services and public policy, domestically and beyond.
Graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Arts (Public Health Sciences), Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health with a Master of Health Science, Harvard Medical School (HMS) with a Master of Science in Bioethics, and the University of Hong Kong with a Doctor of Philosophy in social and lifecourse epidemiology, he is currently an Associate Professor of the School of Public Health and Primary Care of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Co-Director of the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, and the Associate Director of the CUHK Institute of Health Equity. He is also an Affiliate of the HMS Center for Bioethics, and the inaugural US National Academy of Medicine (NAM) International Health Policy Fellow (2018-20), studying the issues of health equity, social determinants of healthy longevity, and global vaccine policies to counter pandemic threats.
Professor Chung is currently the Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Bioethics Association (香港生命倫理學會), established in 1996 with the mission of promoting and increasing awareness of bioethical issues in Hong Kong, and a Board Director of Hong Kong Life and Death Studies Association (香港生死學協會), a non-profit organization aiming to advance death and end-of-life health literacy in Hong Kong. In 2019, he co-edited a best-selling and award-winning book “What Life and Death Education Talks About” (《生死教育講呢啲》) . He is also a frequent guest global health expert presenter of Radio Television Hong Kong’s radio show/podcast World in a Nutshell (十萬八千里). Apart from his academic life, he is an award‐winning and celebrated recording artist/producer, appearing in concerts and music festivals regularly.
