[Event Recap] Annual Palliative Care Update Conference: Stand by Me – A Palliative Care Update

On 17 June, our Centre Co-Director, Prof. Roger Chung, was invited by Dr Ros Taylor MBE, Medical Director of Harlington Hospice in London, to speak at the annual palliative care update conference, Stand by Me – A Palliative Care Update.
Prof. Chung opened the programme with a talk titled More than Meets the Eye? Unpacking Bioethics at the End of Life. Drawing on his research in global bioethics and using the movie The Farewell as a case study, he explored how different specifications of the same ethical principles can lead to different end-of-life decisions, and how culture can influence perspectives. The discussion also touched on moral tension and moral residues.
We thank Dr Ros Taylor MBE, Dr. Jane Wheeler, and Harlington Hospice for bringing together professionals across care settings for a day of shared learning, challenge, and connection. We also thank Ms. Amie Correa Santolamazza for moderating the panel with Dr. Milly Hadland and Ms. Paula Boyle., and for the invigorating discussions on diverse aspects of palliative and end-of-life care.
The CUHK Centre for Bioethics continues to advance these critical conversations, amplifying voices from Hong Kong to the global bioethics community. Stay tuned for more of our exchanges in the months ahead!
The conversations from "Stand by Me – A Palliative Care Update" live on. We are grateful to Harlington Hospice and Dr Ros Taylor MBE for the invitation, and for sharing these recordings with the wider community. Prof. Roger Chung's talk, "More than Meets the Eye? Unpacking Bioethics at the End of Life", explores the ethical frameworks that shape how we care for patients and families at their most vulnerable moments — and we hope it offers useful insights for colleagues across all care settings.
