Doctor of Excellence x CUHK Centre for Bioethics: Bioethics Debate Competition 2025

We are thrilled to celebrate the success of the Bioethics Debate Competition 2025, which was held on September 27th. This flagship event, co-hosted by Doctor of Excellence and CUHK Centre for Bioethics, brought together some of the brightest young minds to engage in rigorous and meaningful discussions on pressing ethical issues in medicine and science.

From a pool of outstanding preliminary essays submissions, 8 top teams advanced to compete in 3 gruelling debate rounds in the group phase. The debates sparked passionate and thought-provoking dialogue on organ donation, AI in medicine, genetic modification, patient autonomy and hormone replacement therapy in adolescents. The stakes soared as the two highest-scoring teams clashed in the impromptu grand final round, resulting in an electrifying and exciting debate.

We extend our gratitude to the esteemed judges, namely Dr. Ann Lau, Professor Kim Chow, Dr. Kanchan Rao Singh, Dr. Chelsea Sun, Dr. Wai-Tat Wong, and Dr. Weian Zhong, who evaluated the preliminary essays and debates with sharp insight, and provided debaters with invaluable wisdom during the debriefing session. Their feedback and perspectives enriched the experience for all participants, fostering an environment of learning and growth.

Congratulations to the winning team, and heartfelt thanks to the 8 finalist teams for delivering high-calibre debates that left us all in awe, and also to each team in the preliminary round for your brilliant submissions. We look forward to seeing everyone of you continue to dive deep into the field of bioethics and academia!
