The CUHK-Columbia University Annual Bioethics Scholarship Programme aims to support full-time postgraduate students and staff from the Chinese University of Hong Kong to participate in Columbia University’s Master’s Programme in Bioethics at the School of Professional Studies.


The Master of Science in Bioethics, part of Columbia University’s Programmes in Bioethics grounds students in historical, philosophical, legal, and social-scientific approaches and models to address bioethical challenges. The programme prepares students to work in various capacities within this new and ever-growing field, and includes a concentration in global bioethics – the first of its kind in the United States.


Number and Value of Scholarship
There will be at least one award of scholarship each year covering full tuition fees for one academic year (approximately US$ 70,000 in 2017-18).


Programme Format
Student (s) may participate in the Bioethics Programme starting in September 2018 in the following manner:


a) They may participate entirely online; or
b) they may participate by attending Columbia in person for one semester*, and completing the remainder of the Master’s in Bioethics online
* All expenses other than tuition fees to be borne by students(s)


Eligibility
Applicants must:
a) be full-time CUHK staff or
b) be full-time CUHK post-graduate students
c) submit an application form available from the CUHK Centre for Bioethics website
d) submit a copy of latest transcript
e) submit a copy of current resume/ CV
f) submit a personal statement of 300-500 words in English detailing reasons for applying for this
specific scholarship and how it could help to achieve personal education and career objectives
g) submit a letter of recommendation from a member of CUHK in support of the scholarship application


Selection criteria
A nomination committee will meet to review applications. Applicants may be invited for an interview.
Preference will be given to applicants from the field of bioethics, medical ethics and law, health policy, health care, economics and life sciences.


Application Procedures
Completed application form together with all requisite documents should be submitted BY MAIL to the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, Room 602, Wong Foo Yuan Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, on or before 31 August 2017. Late or incomplete application will not be considered. Selection results will be announced by October 2017.
