Dr. Edgar W. K. Cheng is Chairman of the World-Wide Investment Co. Ltd., Senior Advisor to the Council of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Special Advisor to the CUHK Centre for Bioethics.
Dr. Cheng has pursued several careers – in the fields of medicine, public service and business and finance – in the United States and Hong Kong over the past forty two years. A graduate from Notre Dame and the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dr. Cheng was Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Cornell and pursued clinical research at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centre until end of 1987 when he returned to Hong Kong. Among the many public service appointments, Dr. Cheng has served as Chairman of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong from 1994 to 1997 and as the Head of the Central Policy Unit of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region from 1999 to 2001.
Dr. Cheng has been dedicated to higher education in Hong Kong throughout his career. He has served as Chairman of the University Grants Committee, a member of the Education Commission, Chairman of the CUHK Council from 2003 to 2009 and as Vice Chairman and then Chairman of the Council for the Sustainable Development from 2003 to 2009. He was a Board Member of the Hastings Center. He continues as Senior Advisor to the University Council.
Dr. Cheng also plays an active role in Hong Kong-China affairs. He was a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee from 2003 to 2018, and was appointed by the Chinese Government to serve as a Hong Kong Affairs Advisor from 1991 to 1997. He became a Member of the Preparatory Committee and also the Selection Committee for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the National People’s Congress from 1996 to 1997.
