The CUHK Centre for Bioethics is pleased to call for applications for the National Academy of Medicine International Health Policy Fellowship Programme 2019/20 with the extended deadline. The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is a leading independent advisory group on health policy in the United States and around the world. Its first-ever International Health Policy Fellowship Programme aims to train and nurture global health policy scholars to put forth informed solutions to some of the most critical health challenges facing the world today and in the future. It provides opportunity for early to mid-career scholars in the fields of bioethics, medical ethics and law, economics and health policy, and healthcare to experience and participate in healthcare or public health studies that improve the care and access to care of patients in domestic and global health care systems. The fellowship programme will initially run for three years, starting from September 2018.
Number and Value of the Fellowship
Grant worth US$200,000 is designated to support the two-year fellowship programme and one fellow will be selected each year, for three consecutive years.
Reimbursement for travel and living expenses is subject to consideration of need.
Programme Format
The fellowship will be awarded for a two-year period with a 25% time residency in Washington DC over a two-year period. Each fellow will select an Academies report and contextualize it to his/her home country. Fellows are expected to maintain his/her current faculty position and responsibilities while being assigned to the fellowship. Initially, the fellow will spend a concentrated three-month period at the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine to learn about the National Academies activities. The fellowship programme will require a 25-30% commitment of time overall. During the fellowship period, fellow will actively learn about the work of an appropriate Board and expert study committee or roundtable and will be assigned a faculty mentor who is a member of the NAM.
Eligibility
Each candidate must:
- be fluent in speaking, reading and writing English
- be full-time CUHK staff in early to mid-career with approximately 2-10 years of post-graduate work experience OR
- be senior professionals in other institutions (e.g. the Hospital Authority, Department of Health) with current affiliation with CUHK (e.g. honorary appointment)

- submit 3 letters of reference and a supporting letter from department chair or dean
Selection Criteria
Candidates will be evaluated by an NAM-appointed committee based on the candidates’ professional qualifications, scholarship, references and the quality of professional accomplishments as evidenced through publications and research grants, and relevance of current field expertise to the work of the NAM. Preference will be given to candidates drawn from the fields of bioethics, medical ethics and law, engineering, economics and health policy, and healthcare; those who completed their post-graduate work 2-10 years ago and who have demonstrated interest and scholarship in one or more of the fields mentioned above. Candidates with an M.D., D.O., J.D., or Ph.D. will be given preference.

Completed application form together with all requisite documents should be submitted BY MAIL to the CUHK Centre for Bioethics, Room 602, Wong Foo Yuan Building, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, on or before 28 June 2019 (Friday). Late or incomplete application will not be considered. Selection results will be announced by September 2019.
