[Event Recap] "Bioethics Bridge Builders" Inauguration Ceremony & Design Thinking Workshop – A Great Success!

On 15 May 2026, the CUHK Centre for Bioethics hosted the Inauguration Ceremony and Design Thinking Workshop for the Bioethics Bridge Builders Program. The first and second cohort builders, together with distinguished guests and advisors, gathered to continue the tradition of cultivating the "Tree of Bioethics" with fingerprints, witnessing the legacy and growth.

✨Event Highlights✨

➢ Welcome Address: Prof. Joyce You, Assistant Dean (Student Engagement) of CUHK Medicine, opened the ceremony by inspiring students to bridge the gap between bioethics and the community.

➢ Blueprint of the Bridge: Centre Co-Director Dr. Ann Lau introduced the 36 new members from the Faculties of Medicine, Science and Education, carrying forward the spirit of the bridge – understanding, empathy and action.

➢ Fingerprint Tree: Building upon the prints left by our inaugural cohort, new builders and guests added their fingerprints to the "Tree of Bioethics". Prof. Joyce You and Dr. Ann Lau added the final touches, officially launching the second cohort and symbolising the passing of the mission between two cohorts.

➢ Thematic Talks:
• Ms. Michelle Kan, Centre-in-Charge of The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf, shared her daily experiences with deaf families and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) from the perspectives of communication barriers and family ethics.

• Prof. Kim Chow from the CUHK School of Life Sciences, explored the biological trajectories of brain health, addiction and ageing, revealing the ethical dimensions hidden in the life course.

➢ Design Thinking Workshop: Under the guidance of our advisors, builders from both cohorts designed actionable plans with fruitful outcomes and an engaging atmosphere.

Our heartfelt gratitude to all guests, advisors and Bridge Builders! We look forward to the impactful bridges of understanding and action you will build together!
