Distinguished Lecture on

“Science, Medicine, and Society: A Brave New World”

Abstract of the Lecture

Advances in science and technology are leading to major innovations and breakthroughs which promise to transform health and medicine. These include impressive progress in brain science, immunotherapy, regenerative therapy, cell and gene therapies, artificial intelligence, and others. It has been speculated that advances in science and technology offer the possibility of curing, managing, or preventing all diseases by the end of this century. However, these technologies also present possible risks or harm, with potential for malicious use or unequitable impact. Society should accelerate the pace of innovation for the public good but must also be prepared to mitigate negative effects.

Globally, our current research and regulation systems are not prepared for a dynamic future of risks, benefits, and unexpected consequences of progress. For innovation to achieve its full potential for good, strategic vision with a coordinated, cross-sectoral governance and ethical framework will be needed to guide the development and use of emerging science and technology in health and medicine. Biomedical science must evolve to embrace equity at all stages of research and development, which will require both national and international coordination, leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration. This presentation will engage us in anticipation of this brave new world.

In this seminar on the ethics of healthcare artificial intelligence (AI), we will explore the key aspects of sustainability, human centeredness, inclusiveness, fairness, and transparency. These principles are crucial in ensuring the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies in the healthcare sector. By considering these principles, we can ensure that AI technologies in healthcare are developed and deployed in a responsible and ethical manner, ultimately benefiting patients, healthcare providers, and society as a whole.
