About the Seminar

For just over two years, terminally-ill New Zealanders have had access to physician aid-in-dying. This new publicly-funded health service is offered under a law passed by parliament in 2019 on the condition that it be put to a public referendum during the 2020 national election. The End of Life Choices Act lays out strict eligibility criteria, allows for patient or clinician administration of medication, and provides for conscientious objection by health professionals. In the first full reporting year for the new service, just over 800 people applied to receive aid in dying, with 328 people proceeding to an assisted death. The origins, development, and specifics of the new law will be described along with facets of its implementation including in medical education.
